Commemorative event dedicated to the memory of Mehdi Huseynzadeh – Mikhaylo in Slovenia
Commemorative event dedicated to the memory of Mehdi Huseynzadeh – Mikhaylo, the brave son of the people of Azerbaijan and Slovenia, the legendary hero, was held in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. As 2025 marks the 80th anniversary since the end of the World War II, during the commemorative event an exhibition dedicated to Azerbaijanis and Slovenians who selflessly fought during the World War II was organized. The documentary produced with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation “Objective Baku”, which reveals the role of the Azerbaijani people in defeating Nazism and the strategic importance of the Azerbaijani oil during the war was screened during the commemorative event.
The opening ceremony of the event took place in Šempas, Nova Gorica, where the monument and memorial museum of Mehdi Huseynzadeh are located. After laying the wreaths in front of the monument of the hero son of Azerbaijan, the participants of the event got acquainted with the memorial museum.
After the national anthems of Azerbaijan and Slovenia were played, speeches were delivered by the Deputy Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Rafael Huseynov, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Slovenia Mr. Rovshan Sadigbayli, Minister of the Environment, Climate and Energy of the Republic of Slovenia Mr. Bojan Kumer, Foreign Policy Advisor to the President of the Republic of Slovenia Mr. Damjan Bergant, Chair of the Interparliamentary Friendship Group with Azerbaijan at the National Assembly of Slovenia Mr. Bojan Čebela, President of the Slovenia-Azerbaijan Friendship Society Mr. Andrej Kompara and Deputy Mayor of Nova Gorica Mr. Marko Tribušon.
The participants of the event visited the village of Vitovlje, where Mikhaylo heroically died in November 1944 and laid wreaths at the memorial plaque.
Then, the participants of the event visited the Trnovo Memorial Park and laid wreaths at the memorial plaque erected in memory of Azerbaijanis who died during World War II. As part of the event, the opening ceremony of the “Peace Bench”, contributed to the Trnovo Memorial Park by the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Slovenia and in cooperation with the Slovenia-Azerbaijan Friendship Society to honor the memory of all Azerbaijanis and Slovenians who fought on these lands and sacrificed their lives during World War II, including the great son of Azerbaijan, Hero Mehdi Huseynzadeh – Mikhaylo, took place.
At the end of the commemorative event, the grave of Mehdi Huseynzadeh in Čepovan was visited.
