The Republic of Austria recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on January 15, 1992. Diplomatic relations were established on February 20, 1992.
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Austria was opened on September 1, 1995. The Embassy of the Republic of Austria in the Republic of Azerbaijan was opened on June 23, 2010.
By the decrees of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated July 12, 2017, Mr. Andreas Königsberger was appointed as Honorary Consul of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the city of St. Pölten, covering the provinces of Upper Austria, Lower Austria, and Burgenland. By the decrees of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated March 11, 2019, Mr. Michael Heinritz was appointed as Honorary Consul in the city of Salzburg, covering the provinces of Salzburg, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg.
The relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria have a positive development dynamic. Reciprocal visits conducted at the level of heads of state, ministers, and heads of various government bodies have been an important factor in the development of relations between the two countries.
In the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of Azerbaijan, there is a working group on interparliamentary relations with Austria, and in the Austrian Parliament, there is a bilateral parliamentary group for South Caucasus-Austria relations. Both groups play an important role in the expansion of interparliamentary relations.
During the official visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, to Austria, a “Joint Declaration on Friendly Relations and Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria” was signed on May 13, 2013. During the same visit, the opening of the Azerbaijan Cultural Center also took place.
In 2018, the Austria-Azerbaijan Cooperation Council was established in Vienna. During President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Austria on March 28-30, 2019, the first meeting of the Advisory Board of the Council, consisting of government members from both countries, was held in Vienna.
