Commemorative event dedicated to the victims of Khojaly held in Maribor, Slovenia
On 33rd anniversary of the Khojaly genocide commemorative event dedicated to the victims of the tragedy was held at the Dobrava Memorial Park in Maribor, Slovenia.
The commemorative event was attended by Mr. Gaya Mammadov, Member of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Head of the Delegation of Azerbaijan to the OSCE PA, Ms. Sevinj Fataliyeva, Member of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Bojan Čebela, Chair of the Interparliamentary Friendship Group with Azerbaijan at the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, Ms. Tina Seršen, Deputy Minister of the Environment, Climate and Energy of the Republic of Slovenia and other officials. Lidija Pliberšek, President of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe delivered a speech at the commemorative event.
Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of SloveniaRovshan Sadigbayli informed the participants of the event about the Khojaly genocide committed against the Azerbaijani civilian population in 1992. The Ambassador noted that this tragedy was not the only crime committed against the civilian population of Azerbaijan, and brought to the attention of the participants of the event that during the conflict, peaceful residents of many other cities, towns and villages of Azerbaijan were subjected to similar atrocities.
MP Gaya Mammadov drew attention to the importance of not forgetting the Khojaly massacre and its grave consequences, and thanked City Municipality of Maribor and the Slovenian government for respecting the memory of the Khojaly victims.
In the speeches, Azerbaijan's interest in ensuring peace and cooperation in the South Caucasus was emphasized.
During his speech Mr.Bojan Čebela, Chair of the Interparliamentary Friendship Group with Azerbaijan at the National Assembly of Slovenia, expressed his condolences to the Azerbaijani people and the families of the victims of the Khojaly massacre, drew attention to the long-term moral consequences of the tragedy for human life, and the importance of ensuring that innocent civilians do not become victims of war.
Wreaths were laid in front of the memorial plaque dedicated to the victims of the Khojaly genocide.
