Republic of Slovenia

Slovenia recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on December 27, 1991, and diplomatic relations were established between the two countries on February 20, 1996.

The Azerbaijani- Slovenia Inter-parliamentary Working Group is functioning in the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Slovenia – Azerbaijan Inter-parliamentary Working group is functioning in the Parliament of Slovenia. Both groups play an important role in expanding inter-parliamentary relations.

On December 22, 2014 and January 20, 2016, the Slovenian Parliament adopted two documents on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. The documents support the peaceful settlement of the conflict on the basis of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and the safe return of internally displaced persons to their homes.

The documents also noted that ethnic cleansing, massacres and mass killings of civilians should be strongly condemned, and in this respect, the massacre committed by the Armenian armed forces on 26 February 1992 in Khojaly was reaffirmed as a crime against humanity.

In 2014, the Azerbaijan-Slovenia Joint Working Group was established.

August 28-30, 2013 – Visit of Minister of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia Mr. Roman Jakic, Minister of Economic Development and Technology Mr. Stanko Stepishnik and Mayor of Ljubljana Mr. Zoran Yankovich to Azerbaijan;

March 12-14, 2015 - Official visit of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Zakir Hasanov to the Republic of Slovenia.

Humanitarian Cooperation

With the support of the state of Azerbaijan, in the town of Shpas in Nova Gorica region, the brave son of Azerbaijan, the hero of the Soviet Union and Slovenia Mehdi Huseynzadeh’s bust was erected in 2007, and in 2011 a memorial museum was opened.

Also, a memorial plaque dedicated to victims of the Khojaly genocide was erected at the Dobrava Memorial Park Complex on May 31, 2018 in Maribor, Slovenia.
