Republic of Austria

The Republic of Austria recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on January 15, 1992. Diplomatic relations have been established on February 20, 1992.

The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Austria was opened on September 1, 1995. The Embassy of the Republic of Austria in the Republic of Azerbaijan was opened on June 23, 2010.

In accordance with the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated July 12, 2017, Mr. Helmut Manzenreiter has been appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, covering the provinces Carinthia and Styria, and Mr. Andreas Königsberger has been appointed Honorary Consul in Sankt Pölten, covering Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Burgenland.

In accordance with the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated March 11, 2019, Mr. Michael Heinritzi has been appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Salzburg, covering Salzburg, Tirol and Vorarlberg provinces of the Republic of Austria.

Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria have positive development dynamics. Mutual visits at the level of heads of state, members of parliament, ministers and heads of various state structures have been very important in the development of relations between the two countries.

The Azerbaijani-Austrian Inter-parliamentary Working Group is functioning in the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Austrian-South Caucasus Bilateral Parliamentary Group is functioning in the Austrian Parliament. Both groups play an important role in expanding inter-parliamentary relations.

The signing of the “Joint Declaration on Friendship and Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria” on May 13, 2013 during the official visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev to Austria was an important event in bilateral relations. The opening ceremony of the Azerbaijani Cultural Center was also held during the visit.

In 2018, the Austrian-Azerbaijani Cooperation Council was established in Vienna. Within the framework of the visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev to Austria on March 28-30, 2019, the first meeting of Council’s Advisory Board consisting of government members of both countries was held in Vienna.
